The New Castle Council on Race and Equity joins its voice with the collective acknowledging the verdict in the Chauvin trial for the murder of George Floyd. We do not celebrate. We understand the loss of George Floyd’s life is a sacrifice too great for any one person or family to make in pursuit of justice. We continue to mourn not only with the family of George Floyd but with the families of countless other BIPOC men and women who have lost, and are still losing, their lives at the hand of police officers who have used excessive force. We commend the members of law enforcement who courageously stood to denounce the behavior as not representative of proper training. We commend the Minnesota attorney general and prosecution team who worked relentlessly to present an air-tight case to a diverse 12-member jury. We commend the members of the community, young and old, Black and white, who not only bore witness to the horrific crime but said and did something about it. We trust the judge will likewise mandate a sentence commensurate with the crimes committed.
We do express relief, however, that in this instance we as humanity have hopefully moved one step closer to justice and racial equity.  And while we express relief, we steel ourselves in further resolve to continue the fight for justice.  We pray this moment represents the beginning of meaningful and permanent change for this nation.
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
