Imagine if it was your 83-year-old grandmother.
Last week, Nancy Toh, an Asian-American woman, was walking outside The Westchester mall in White Plains. A man approached her, spit on her, punched her in the face, and knocked her down. Ms. Toh, who is Korean American, hit her head on the pavement and lost consciousness. When she awoke, covered in blood, her assailant – who was later arrested – was gone.
Anti-Asian hate crimes are in our own backyard and all over the country. This week, a gunman in Atlanta murdered six Asian women. These incidents are just the latest in escalating attacks on Asians. Women are particularly at risk – Asian-American women report hate crimes at 2.3 times the rate of men.
