2020 has been an unprecedented year of upheaval, uncertainty, and fear. As we gather around our tables this Thanksgiving, across the country, and our community, empty chairs will represent loved ones lost in a raging pandemic and absent family members forced to stay away to protect those most vulnerable. As we navigate COVID, a declining economy, and a political climate polarized unlike any other time in recent memory, it is now, in the darkest of times, we must truly remember to give thanks for all we have.
The CRE is most grateful for our volunteers - 115 community council members who came together to fight, advocate, strive, and pave the way for a more equitable, inclusive, and welcoming New Castle for all families. We thank the Town Board who in the face of continuous criticism, adversity, and challenge, remains steadfast in their promise to protect BIPOC members of the community, and to blaze trails for equity and inclusivity despite opposition. We give thanks above all for our ability to celebrate one more Thanksgiving. And while our tables may be smaller, our hearts are certainly fuller with gratitude and grace.
The CRE remembers this Thanksgiving all those who have lost their lives in the pandemic - honors survivors, first responders, allies and advocates. We honor those who have marched on bridges, highways, and streets to assert that Black Lives Matter. And above all, we honor the indigenous people upon whose land we live, whose blood was shed so that we may feast in comfort. On this Thanksgiving we remember our privilege, give thanks for progress, and make a promise for a better future.
