Statement from CREI on the Murder of Tyre Nichols

LOGO-SIMPLE(JPEG)

The CREI and New Castle residents stand firmly with our Black neighbors in the wake of another senseless brutal murder of a young Black man by police officers.  When Black parents have to fear for their children’s basic safety during routine or targeted police stops, we see an America that is heart-wrenchingly flawed.  We must work together to reform our institutions and reform our hearts.

Tyre Nichols was murdered after a traffic stop in Memphis.  The murder, reconstructed through police body cameras, was a heart-breaking terror.  Five police officers were charged with second degree murder; and more officers were relieved from duty.  Also terminated were two emergency medical technicians and a lieutenant from the fire department for failing to provide required assistance to the brutalized Tyre.  The investigation continues.

The total disregard for human life shocks every awakened conscience.  This brutality is an institutional failure, because not one, not two, but a large group of officers participated.  A Black man was murdered.  Let justice be done in Memphis, no more and no less.

The CREI wishes Tyre’s family and loved ones the strength and courage to deal with this tragedy and loss.

The CREI would like to offer ourselves as a resource to town residents on issues around race, equity, and inclusion. Please come to us with your thoughts, your concerns, or if you’re in need of support of any kind. We are residents and community members here to serve you.
